My Sentiments...Exactly
Today is the feast of the Epiphany and today ends the Christmas season. Looking deeper into the meaning of epiphany (feeling) it says "the sudden realization or comprehension of the essence or meaning of something". It dawned on me that the past Christmas season was in fact, epiphany as it gave me a different meaning of the season.
In September, our company folded up and up to this date, we are still not paid the separation pay due to us. For over 2 months, I was jobless. I knew Christmas would be a lot different this time. With no income, piling debts, where would Christmas fit in, in a world where the season is so commercialized.
As the Christmas season sets in, anger, misery and depression had set in too. Carolers were shooed away. We had to keep the doors closed most of the time. I turned into an Ebenezer Scrooge, the main character in Charles Dicken's novel "A Christmas Carol". I turned cold hearted. Christmas carols used to hype up my feelings of happiness. But not this year.
In the past years, the cupboards were full by November for the noche buena menu ingredients. The 24th and the 31st of December were usually busy from early morning. This time, we busied ourselves cleaning the house as there was no food to prepare. We had a simple noche buena menu, lechon manok from Baliwag and home cooked Spaghetti. Me and the kids (not really kids anymore as they are 21 and 18 now) heard mass around 9pm and shared the simple noche buena by midnight.
The following day, Ina and Ate Sencia arrived with crispy pata, afritada, puto, suman, leche flan, buco pandan and so many more for us to feast on. Kuya Poring and Ate Sylvia arrived after lunch. We communicated through Skype with Tintin and Krispet.
It was a simple Christmas lunch and get together, it was back to basics, back to family. I realized that Christmas can be uncommercialized (as there were no gifts to give). I realized that it was not the PRESENTS that mattered but the PRESENCE of the family. I may have not given my kids anything for Christmas, but the situation we were into gave us more appreciation for the gift of FAMILY, no matter if it is dysFUNctional, but it is still FUN....
Thank God for the gift of FAMILY.

Photos from Ando & Odeth Comia and family
Here are some pictures from Kuya Ando and Ate Odeth taken at New Year's eve... typical pinoy media noche... pansit, kakanin, inihaw with matching sawsawan, leche flan... mouthwatering!
In the family picture are Kuya Ando, Ate Odeth, Chris, Gerard and Girlie with husband Bong and daughter Camille.
Feast your eyes on these folks!
